  • Twenty-six TDCJ-denied books on Anna ISD shelves were denied for sexual content

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice — the agency that runs Texas state prisons — maintains a list of books and other publications it has refused to allow inside its facilities. Each entry cites the specific page or pages and the specific content that triggered the denial: a photograph, a rape scene, a depiction of a minor, a sexually explicit image. TDCJ calls it the Denied Books List.

On June 2, 2026, LION cross-referenced the eight Anna ISD library catalogs released in the district’s records disclosure against the TDCJ list.

Thirty-nine books on Anna ISD library shelves appear on the TDCJ list. Twenty-six of those thirty-nine were denied for sexual content — sexually explicit images, depictions of rape, indecency with a child, and graphic depictions of sex involving minors. Twenty-three are stocked at Anna High School only; two are stocked at the high school and also at Slayter Creek Middle School; one is stocked at Clemons Creek Middle School and Slayter Creek but not at the high school. The twenty-six titles, alphabetical, with TDCJ’s stated reason for denial:

    • After the Fire by Will Hill — indecency with a child
    • Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope by Jenna Bush — indecency with a child — also at Slayter Creek Middle School

  • Anna ISD responds with curriculum and library materials

On the same day LION’s records request was filed, Anna ISD District Librarian Ellen Peeples responded with a shared document titled “Anna ISD’s curriculum and library materials for the 2025-2026 school year.”

The document linked eight library-catalog reports, one per campus, exported from the district’s Lorenzo Library System:

The document also linked the district’s Pre-K through fifth-grade reading-program materials:

Three sub-links inside the document — for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Reading Language Arts materials — returned read-access errors on first access. LION flagged the access issue the same evening, and Anna ISD confirmed the next morning that permissions had been updated.

  • LION files public-records request at Anna ISD

On June 1, 2026, LION filed a Texas Public Information Act request with Anna Independent School District, reference AnnaISD-PIA-001. The request asks for two records:

    1. A current complete library catalog for every Anna ISD campus — elementary schools, Clemons Creek Middle School, Slayter Creek Middle School, Anna High School, and any alternative or charter campus libraries — preferred as a native export from the district’s library management system.
    2. District-wide and campus-specific approved reading lists, supplemental materials lists, and English/Language Arts curriculum book lists used in the 2025–26 school year.

The request was directed to Karen Walker, Anna ISD’s Director of Communications and designated Public Information Coordinator. Anna ISD’s statutory response window under Texas Government Code §552.221 is ten business days.
